Alma Mater offers accredited bachelor's, master's, and doctoral programs through Alma Mater Europaea ECM, located in Maribor, Slovenia, with study centers in multiple cities. 2.2 Is the study program accredited?

2.3 How long do the studies last and is it online?

Program Information:

  • Duration: The program spans four semesters over a period of two years. 

  • Credits: Successful completion of the program will earn you 120 ECTS credits. 

  • Title: Upon graduation, you will be awarded the degree of Master of Sustainable Development. 

  • Language: The program is conducted in English, ensuring accessibility for international students. 

  • Location: The program is primarily delivered virtually, with annual in-person sessions held in either Austria or Slovenia. Students seeking financial assistance for travel expenses are encouraged to apply for grants, which will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. 

  • Program Delivery: The program follows a hybrid model, combining virtual learning with three in-person sessions.

The program duration is 20 months, with four five-month semesters. Graduates of a four-year undergraduate program may receive course credits, potentially shortening the program. The first two semesters focus on lectures, discussions, and online activities. The third semester offers internships with leading sustainability organizations in the EU. The final semester is dedicated to the master's thesis. Completion of nine mandatory courses, three electives, and the thesis is required. Elective courses cover diverse aspects of sustainable development. Students can explore courses from other master's programs. The thesis involves research or a 30-50-page sustainable corporate transformation plan. Intensive five-day sessions take place in coastal Slovenia, Vienna, and Maribor. A significant majority of the MA and PhD students come from various international backgrounds. 2.14 Is attendance at meetings mandatory?

Active participation is highly valued at Alma Mater, and we encourage our students to attend meetings, submit assignments, and actively engage with the Alma Mater community. Attendance is mandatory for the theoretical online lessons as well as the training hours provided annually.

2.15 How are the courses organized?

The courses offered in the academic year at Alma Mater follow a hybrid format, combining online and face-to-face components. 

Each course comprises modules prepared by the Sustainable Development Academy or the professor, along with assignments, lectures, presentations, and discussions. In 10-credit courses, students meet eight times, while in five-credit classes, they meet four times throughout the semester. A total of 24 two-hour meetings, one per week, are scheduled. Additionally, there is a mandatory intensive face-to-face cycle held in Maribor, which includes practical laboratory exercises, seminars, and exams. Students also have the opportunity to engage in a practical internship within their local area. The academic year's lesson schedule is provided at the beginning of the program. To ensure flexibility, in-class lectures are live-streamed and recorded for students' convenience.

2.16 Does an Alma Mater student get health insurance, meal discount and visa?

As a student at Alma Mater, you possess legal status under Slovenian law, granting you eligibility for an EU visa, health insurance, and meal vouchers in Slovenia in accordance with national regulations. These entitlements are provided to support your well-being and ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

2.18 I am a non-European student, what can I expect from the study?

Alma Mater students, including many from non-European countries, have the unique advantage of immersing themselves fully in the rich culture and business practices of Europe. Students from outside the EU have the opportunity to study and work part-time in Slovenia or Austria under an EU visa. This allows them to gain practical experience and further enrich their educational journey while residing in these countries.

2.19 What is an international internship?

While pursuing your studies, you have the opportunity to work in various settings, including corporate, governmental, or nonprofit offices, within an EU member state. This practical experience gained from such an internship complements your academic journey and provides valuable insights into different sectors and professional environments.

2.20 How do students take exams?

The majority of exams will be conducted online, ensuring accessibility and flexibility for students. However, there will be two courses that require in-person meetings to be completed. Additionally, some exams will be in the form of assignments that students must individually or collaboratively complete and submit. 

2.21 What happens if I do not take all the exams required by the study plan?

To progress to the second year, each student must successfully acquire a minimum of 60 credits in the first year. If needed, the university may arrange additional exam sessions upon the student's request and at an additional cost. In cases where a student is unable to accumulate the required credits, options such as requesting an extension or taking a sabbatical year are available. During a sabbatical year, the student can take the missing exams to fulfill the credit requirements.

2.22 Why are the study groups small?

Lectures and discussions at Alma Mater are conducted in small groups, ensuring an intimate learning environment with fewer than 40 students. This setup fosters enhanced communication, stronger connections among participants, and facilitates meaningful interactions with professors. The university encourages students to perceive themselves as colleagues rather than mere students, cultivating a sense of belonging and active engagement. Even for online students, the group size remains limited to up to 40 students, enabling collaboration and knowledge sharing in joint projects with peers from around the globe.

2.23 When are the lectures and meetings usually held?

Sessions are typically scheduled on Fridays, running from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. CET. During the in-person sessions in mid-March, lectures and activities are conducted throughout the day. The online study program is thoughtfully designed, allowing online students to have the flexibility to study at their preferred time, accommodating individual schedules and preferences.

The degree obtained upon completion of the program is Master of Sustainable Development.


3. Application & Enrollment

3.1 Does Alma Mater organize open days or online orientation?

Alma Mater arranges annual open days, typically held prior to the commencement of the academic year. In addition, online orientations are conducted approximately once a month, providing regular opportunities for prospective students to gain insights and information about the university.

3.2 How many students are admitted to individual study courses at Alma Mater?

The availability of vacancies for each academic year is announced through the annual call for admission, typically published on our website www.almamater.si in December. This call for admission is also officially published in the Official Gazette of the Republic of Slovenia and on the website of the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport, usually in January.

3.3 Is it necessary to pass an admission test to become a student?

No, there is no admission test required for enrollment. However, it is highly recommended to secure your spot by enrolling as early as possible, as there is a maximum number of students allotted for each academic year. The university evaluates your application and curriculum vitae (CV) as part of the admission process.

3.4 Where can I find information regarding admission to Alma Mater?

The admission announcement for Alma Mater is typically published on the Alma Mater website, www.almamater.si. For first-level study programs, the announcement is usually made in December, while for second and third-level study programs, it is published in January. Furthermore, the call for admission is officially published in the Official Gazette of the Republic of Slovenia and on the website of the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport, typically in February.

3.5 How can I apply?

Please reach out to us by completing a simple online form. By doing so, you are not committing to enroll in the program; rather, the form serves as a means for us to gather information about you as a candidate. A representative from the university will then contact you to address any inquiries you may have. If selected by the selection board, you will receive an invitation to enroll. During the registration process for the Sustainable Development program, students are required to submit their bachelor's degree final certificate, transcript of grades, and a diploma supplement.

3.6 Is it possible to request the recognition of credits and have some exams validated?

Yes, it is possible to request credit recognition for coursework completed at other institutions. When filling out the form, please provide detailed information about the credits obtained from the previous institution. It's important to note that there is a fee of EUR 1000 associated with the credit recognition procedure.

3.7 What are the program enrollment requirements?

To be eligible for enrollment in the MA in Sustainable Development, students must have successfully completed a minimum of a three-year undergraduate program. It is important to note that the number of available spots for admission is limited, and only a select number of students will be accepted into the program.


4. The University Fee

4.1 What are the tuition fees for study courses at Alma Mater?

4.2 What is the cost of the entire program?

The annual tuition fee for the program is EUR 8,600, covering two semesters. However, if you have completed a four-year undergraduate program and are eligible for early graduation at Alma Mater Europaea due to the credits earned from your undergraduate coursework, a potential cost reduction may be available. The tuition fee encompasses all courses, study materials, and access to an e-classroom featuring recorded videos of all lectures.

4.3 Can I pay in installments?

Upon enrollment, a payment of EUR 2,000 is required. The remaining balance can be paid in equal installments over a period of five or eight installments. Please note that if you opt for the installment plan, an administration fee of EUR 20 will be added to each payment.

4.4 Can I apply for a scholarship?

Applicants have the opportunity to apply for the scholarship offered by the Academicus Foundation. 

The foundation's fund provides scholarships for a three-year study period, totaling up to EUR 6,000 (EUR 2,000 per year). These scholarships are specifically designed to support successful and talented students, as well as those facing financial challenges. Interested individuals can submit their scholarship application using this form

It is important to note that applying for the scholarship does not require candidates to enroll or commit to any obligations. Within 10 days following the application deadline, applicants will be notified of the approved scholarship amount.

4.5 In addition to the university fee, what other costs must the student cover?

In addition to the university fee, students are required to pay an admission fee of €100.00 for each year of study. There is also a one-time fee of €50.00 for the issuance of the booklet of notions and skills.

4.6 Is it possible to pay the tuition fee and other contributions in cash at the Alma Mater Student Office?

Unfortunately, cash payments at the Alma Mater Student Office are not accepted.

4.7 Can a legal entity pay the tuition fee for me?

Yes, the tuition fee can also be paid by a legal entity.

Alma Mater can assist in securing a discounted rate at a hotel for students, ensuring that the cost per night does not exceed EUR 140. However, students have the flexibility to book accommodation of their choice. It is the responsibility of students to arrange their own transportation to the location of the in-person sessions held in mid-March each year. Alma Mater will provide complimentary lunch during these sessions. Grant applications for travel expenses are encouraged, and they will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

The Student Council serves as the representative body of Alma Mater students, ensuring equal representation from all study programs. Its core objective is to uphold the quality of programs and extracurricular activities while fostering practical collaboration among students, the faculty council, and the management. At Alma Mater, we provide comprehensive support for our students in various activities.
